Chinese grammar is not a set of rules you can memorise in an afternoon. 了 has multiple jobs. 把 reorders your sentence. 被 changes who did what to whom. Hidden Dragon handles the "what is this" part by detecting patterns in whatever you are reading. Zero to Hero handles the "how does this actually work" part with short video lessons.
Zero to Hero is a video grammar curriculum that covers HSK 1 through 7 with focused lessons written for learners, not linguists. We have mapped 338 of those lessons to grammar patterns and linked them directly into the app. Tap a word, see the pattern, press V, watch a video.
How it works
Most apps that offer grammar feedback use AI. You type a sentence, an AI model reads it and tells you what the grammar means. This works some of the time. The rest of the time, the model invents a rule that sounds convincing and is wrong. We know because we tested it.
Hidden Dragon does Chinese grammar differently. The app checks every Chinese sentence against a carefully built set of grammar patterns, no AI involved, nothing generated on the fly. (For other languages we do use AI, but Chinese grammar works better with a hand-built system.) It finds the patterns in milliseconds and links each one to a human-written explanation and, when available, a Zero to Hero video lesson. The result is instant and reliable: the app cannot invent a grammar rule that does not exist. The tradeoff is that we have to add every pattern by hand, so the coverage will never be as complete as an AI that guesses.
The explanations come from three places: AllSet Learning's Chinese Grammar Wiki, our own collection of verb patterns (like 看到, 吃完, 记住), and Zero to Hero video lessons. The video lessons are the most useful because a written explanation tells you what a pattern means, but watching a teacher explain it shows you how to actually use it.
What has a video
Of the grammar patterns the app recognises, 338 have a video lesson attached. That covers grammar from HSK 1 all the way through HSK 6. Another 181 patterns have explanations and example sentences but no video yet; we add those as we find the right Zero to Hero lesson.

HSK 1 patterns are things like 什么 (what), 吗 (question particle), and 很 (very). HSK 6 patterns are things like 愈……愈…… (the more… the more…), 不由得 (can't help but), and 一经 (once…). There is also curriculum data for 164 HSK 7 patterns, but none of those have video links yet.
How it feels to use
Open any story in Hidden Dragon. Tap a word. If the app detects a grammar pattern, a section labelled Grammar appears. Each pattern has a purple PlayCircle icon next to it. Hover says "Watch on Zero to Hero (new tab)."
Press V. The video opens.

The first sentence contains 因为……所以…… (because… so…). The second contains 把 (the disposal construction). Both have video lessons linked. Tap 因为, 所以, 把, or 了 to see the PlayCircle icon.
That is the whole interaction. Two taps, one key press, and you are watching a lesson about a grammar pattern you just met in a real sentence. The sentence stays on screen. The video explains the rule. You go back to reading.
Paired patterns get video links too
Some grammar patterns come in pairs: 因为……所以……, 虽然……但是…… (although… but…), 不仅……而且…… (not only… but also…). When the app finds the first half of a pair, it checks whether the second half is also in the sentence. If both are there, the pair is shown as a complete teaching unit. If only the first half is present, you see a warning: you are missing the second half, and the app tells you what it should be.
Both cases link to the relevant Zero to Hero video, even when the exact phrasing varies. For example, the data might store a pattern as 如果……(的话), 就…… but the app will match 如果……就…… in your sentence.
What we are still working on
Not every pattern has a video. Of the grammar patterns we cover, 338 have videos and 181 have explanations only. We add more as we map them to the Zero to Hero curriculum.
There are also some grammar points the engine does not pick up at all. Of the 128 most important patterns for HSK 1 through 6, about 14 are not in the system yet. These are mostly less common patterns we have not prioritised.
A trickier problem is that some patterns look similar to each other. 了 alone has nine variations (了 indicating completion, 了 indicating change of state, and so on). 把 has five. 得 has six. The app picks the best match for your sentence, but you may occasionally find a video that covers a broader usage than what you are looking at. We track these cases and adjust the matching when they cause confusion.
Why not AI
AI models produce confident, grammatical-sounding explanations that are wrong. 把 gets described as "emphasis on the subject" when it actually marks the object. Example sentences come out technically correct but pragmatically bizarre: strings a native speaker would parse but never say.
The video lesson approach avoids this. Every link points to a lesson written and recorded by a human teacher who designed a curriculum around these patterns. The explanations are not generated. They are taught. A wrong grammar explanation does not just waste your time; it plants a rule you have to unlearn later.
Zero to Hero is not the only source, and it does not replace a teacher. But when you are reading a story and hit a grammar pattern you half-remember, you can get a full video explanation in about two seconds. No AI involved.
Where the links appear
Word Panel. Tap any word with a detected grammar pattern. The panel shows the pattern name, importance stars, and icons for both the AllSet Grammar Wiki and Zero to Hero video. V opens the video, G opens the grammar wiki.
Grammar Detail view. In the detailed grammar section, curated example sentences from Zero to Hero appear in a purple card with a "Curated Example" badge and a pronunciation button. These are hand-picked sentences that illustrate the pattern clearly, as opposed to the sometimes-ambiguous examples generated from your own text.
What is next
There are more Zero to Hero lessons than the 338 we have mapped. And linking a video is one thing; showing you where that pattern fits in the course (which unit, which lesson, what to study next) would be more useful. The building blocks are there.
