HSK 2.0 vs 3.0 vs 3.1: What Changed (2026 Update)

Complete evolution: HSK 2.0 → 3.0 (2021) → 3.1 (2026)

Important: The official HSK 3.0 standard receives updates and revisions over time. The “HSK 3.1” label is an unofficial community naming convention used to distinguish the upcoming 2026 revision from the original 2021 HSK 3.0 standard. Officially, both versions are part of the HSK 3.0 framework.

The 2026 revision takes effect July 2026. This guide tracks all changes across HSK versions for learning continuity.

What is HSK? Levels, versions, and how it works

📚 What is HSK?

HSK is a roadmap for learning Chinese. It's a set of vocabulary levels — from everyday basics all the way to near-native fluency. Most learners use it to know what to study next, even if they never take the exam.

Quick self-check

🍜 Can you order food and count to 100? → HSK 1-2

🗣️ Can you hold a basic conversation? → HSK 3-4

📰 Can you read a news headline? → HSK 5-6

HSK versions

HSK 2.0 (2010-2021): 6 levels, ~5,000 words — the version most learners grew up with.

HSK 3.0 (2021): Expanded to 9 levels, ~11,000 words. More granular at the advanced end.

HSK 3.1 (2026): Refined vocabulary list with minor adjustments. Hidden Dragon uses this.

If you studied with HSK 2.0 materials, your level may look different on the new scale — the comparison table below shows exactly what changed.

The Evolution of HSK Standards

The Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK) Chinese proficiency test has undergone significant changes over the years. This guide documents the complete evolution across three major versions, showing how vocabulary requirements have changed for learners worldwide.

Understanding these changes helps learners choose appropriate materials, set realistic goals, and transition between different HSK standards smoothly.

Where to Focus Your Energy

High Priority

  • HSK 1-3 core vocabulary - fundamental words used constantly
  • Practical daily vocabulary - food, transport, shopping, weather
  • Listening and speaking practice - HSK is only one aspect of fluency

Lower Priority (Until Advanced)

  • Memorizing level numbers - knowing a word matters more than its level
  • Literary chengyu - most appear at HSK 7-9, learn them later
  • Version differences - interesting but not critical for learning
For Current HSK Test Takers

HSK 2.0 (Legacy) Test Takers:

  • Your vocabulary remains valid and useful for real-world Chinese
  • 438 words became easier in HSK 3.0 (good news!)
  • 1,917 words became harder - you may know advanced vocabulary without realizing it
  • Consider transitioning to HSK 3.0/3.1 materials to stay aligned with current standards

HSK 3.0 (2021) Test Takers:

  • Test format changes take effect July 2026
  • Most vocabulary remains unchanged between 3.0 and 3.1
  • Level 1-5 words mostly became harder (moved to level 6)
  • If testing before July 2026, continue with HSK 3.0 materials

Key Takeaway: The vocabulary you learn remains useful regardless of which HSK version you studied.

For Textbook Users

Which Textbook Should I Use?

  • HSK Standard Course (official textbooks) - HSK 3.0 aligned
  • Integrated Chinese - Generally HSK 2.0 aligned, still excellent
  • New Practical Chinese Reader - HSK 2.0 aligned
  • Chinese Made Easy - Mix of HSK 2.0 and practical vocabulary

What About HSK 3.1 Materials?

  • Continue using your current HSK 3.0 textbooks - they are still highly relevant
  • Supplement with authentic materials (news, videos, podcasts) for real-world exposure
  • Use Hidden Dragon's vocabulary books which reflect the latest HSK 3.1 standards

Recommendation: Choose textbooks based on teaching approach and content quality, not just HSK alignment.

For Self-Studiers
  1. Start with HSK 1-3 vocabulary regardless of version - these are foundational words you will encounter daily
  2. Use spaced repetition systems (SRS) like Hidden Dragon's flashcard system to review vocabulary efficiently
  3. Read graded readers and stories at your level - our story library shows HSK level for each word
  4. Practice with authentic content once you reach HSK 4+ to develop real comprehension skills

Pro Tip: Learn vocabulary in context through stories and sentence mining rather than isolated flashcard drilling.
