Complete evolution: HSK 2.0 → 3.0 (2021) → 3.1 (2026)
Important: The official HSK 3.0 standard receives updates and revisions over time. The “HSK 3.1” label is an unofficial community naming convention used to distinguish the upcoming 2026 revision from the original 2021 HSK 3.0 standard. Officially, both versions are part of the HSK 3.0 framework.
The 2026 revision takes effect July 2026. This guide tracks all changes across HSK versions for learning continuity.
HSK is a roadmap for learning Chinese. It's a set of vocabulary levels — from everyday basics all the way to near-native fluency. Most learners use it to know what to study next, even if they never take the exam.

HSK versions
HSK 2.0 (2010-2021): 6 levels, ~5,000 words — the version most learners grew up with.
HSK 3.0 (2021): Expanded to 9 levels, ~11,000 words. More granular at the advanced end.
HSK 3.1 (2026): Refined vocabulary list with minor adjustments. Hidden Dragon uses this.
If you studied with HSK 2.0 materials, your level may look different on the new scale — the comparison table below shows exactly what changed.
HSK Textbooks
Download HSK flashcard books (Levels 1-7) from the Book Store. We offer two flavors: official HSK textbooks and LTL School textbooks. Each book covers the full vocabulary list for that level with example sentences and pronunciation.

Tap any word while reading sample sentences, stories, or conversations to see its HSK level, pinyin, definition, tone, and grammar patterns. When we detect a known grammar pattern, we will provide links to AllSet Grammar for deeper explanations and/or Chinese Zero to Hero for video lessons (Chinese Zero To Hero might require a separate subscription).
Color-coded reading
Every word in stories, flashcards and conversations is colored by its HSK level — so you always know what's new and what you've mastered.

Key Takeaway: The vocabulary you learn remains useful regardless of which HSK version you studied.
Recommendation: Choose textbooks based on teaching approach and content quality, not just HSK alignment.
Pro Tip: Learn vocabulary in context through stories and sentence mining rather than isolated flashcard drilling.
