miserly, stingy, thrifty

Etymology

Pictograph of wheat (麥) being stored in a granary (㐭). Based on the original meaning "harvest; hoard". The meaning later shifted to "stingy".

《說文》：“嗇，愛濇也。从來，从。來者而藏之，故田夫謂之嗇夫。，古文嗇从田。”
